WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the Supreme Court ruled that the federal government cannot ban bump stocks—which allow AR-15-style rifles to fire automatically, like a machine gun. Bump stocks were banned after a gunman in Las Vegas killed 60 people and wounded over 500 more in 2017.

Stand Up America Deputy Communications Director & Press Secretary Sarah Harris issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision to reinstate bump stocks:

“Americans have the right to live without fear of gun violence. Yet, MAGA justices on the Court are more concerned with their standing with the NRA than protecting American lives. This out of control Court worships the gun industry with no regard for how many lives will be lost.

“For nearly three years, I worked with gun violence survivors, including those from the shooting at the Route 91 festival in Las Vegas, whose lives were shattered by senseless gun violence. For the Court to allow bump stocks back in civilian hands is a slap in the face to the millions of gun violence survivors across the country.

“The Supreme Court will not stop its attacks on our fundamental freedoms. Congress must stand up and protect American lives by reforming this broken Court.”

Stand Up America’s nearly 2 million members have driven 800,000 constituent emails and calls to legislators and submitted over 30,000 letters to the editor in support of Supreme Court reform—including court expansion, term limits, and a binding code of ethics. They will continue calling and writing until Congress finally acts to reform this Court.
