ARIZONA REPUBLICANS BYPASS GOVERNOR TO PROTECT MAGA SUPREME COURT JUSTICES AND END JUDICIAL TERM LIMITS

PHOENIX—Last night, MAGA lawmakers in Arizona passed SCR1044, an 11th hour attempt to protect the far-right state supreme court. If approved by voters in November, SCR1044 would eliminate Arizonans’ right to vote out supreme court justices and, in particular, protect two justices of the Arizona Supreme Court who voted to impose a radical abortion ban across the state. Both of these members are up for reelection this year. Disturbingly, State Senator Shawnna Bolick voted for the measure despite the fact that her husband, Clint Bolick, sits on the Arizona Supreme Court.

Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following response on the legislative referrals passage:

“MAGA Republicans are launching a last-minute assault on judicial accountability and the rule of law in Arizona in a desperate attempt to protect two far-right members of the state Supreme Court who imposed an 1864 abortion ban across the state.

“If passed in November, SCR1044 would eliminate judicial term limits in Arizona, granting unchecked, lifetime authority to far-right judges to impose their political agendas from the bench. Stand Up America’s community in Arizona will work to ensure voters understand what’s at stake this November and block these attacks on their democracy.”

This session, Stand Up America worked alongside local groups like Progress Arizona to inform voters about the impact SCR1044 will have on Arizonans and their communities and drove more than 7,200 constituent calls and emails to call on lawmakers to reject this and other anti-democratic ballot referrals.
