AUGUSTA—This week, the Maine legislature passed legislation to join the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would ensure that the presidential candidate who gets the most votes in all 50 states and the District of Columbia is the candidate who walks into the White House on Inauguration Day. Excluding Maine, 16 states and Washington D.C., with 205 electoral votes in total, have joined the compact. The bill will go back through each chamber for a procedural vote before heading to Governor Janet Mills’s desk.

This session, Stand Up America has supported Democracy Maine and League of Women Voters Maine to advocate for this legislation. Stand Up America members in Maine sent more than 200 emails to their state representatives in support of joining the National Popular Vote Compact.

Stand Up America’s Senior Associate of Policy & Political Affairs, Sunwoo Oh, released the following statement after the passage:

“The presidency shouldn’t be won by the candidate who wins the strategic combination of battleground states—it should be won by the candidate who receives the most votes overall. Two of the last 5 U.S. presidents lost the popular vote, making clear how antiquated and undemocratic the Electoral College system is in practice.

“Every American deserves an equal voice in our presidential elections. NPV puts power back in the hands of individual voters and will help increase turnout with voters knowing their vote matters. Each vote should count equally in every presidential election.

“We applaud the Maine legislators for prioritizing this legislation and look forward to Governor Mills swiftly signing this bill into law as we continue to build momentum for the national popular vote nationally.”
