MONTGOMERY—Today, the Alabama Senate passed SB 1, an anti-voter bill that would charge individuals with a crime for simply distributing absentee ballot applications or helping their neighbors vote absentee. Stand Up America’s members in Alabama have sent over 800 emails to their state legislators in opposition to this and similar legislation over the past year.

Stand Up America Communications Manager and Alabama native Tracy Adair had the following response to the passage of SB 1:

“As an Alabama native, I’m outraged and disappointed to see partisan politicians in my home state turn their backs on everyday Alabamians who are helping their neighbors access the ballot. Our lawmakers should be doing everything they can to support older voters, voters with disabilities, and other voters who might need additional support – not erecting new barriers to the ballot box.

“Alabamians deserve better from their elected officials. Governor Kay Ivey must veto this legislation to stop her party from undermining the freedom to vote in our state. There’s still time to do right by voters.”
