MONTGOMERY—Today, the Alabama House passed SB 1, an anti-voter bill that would charge individuals with a crime for simply distributing absentee ballot applications or helping their neighbors vote absentee. The bill would also make it illegal to pay others to assist voters with voting via absentee ballot. Stand Up America’s members in Alabama have sent over 800 emails to their state legislators in opposition to this and similar legislation over the past year.

Stand Up America Communications Manager and Alabama native Tracy Adair had the following response to the passage of SB 1:

“SB 1 is a prime example of MAGA voter suppression at work. Preventing older voters, voters with disabilities, and other voters who might need additional support from getting assistance with the threat of a potential criminal charge is cruel and anti-democratic. This discriminatory legislation has no business in the land of the free.

“It’s time for Governor Kay Ivey to step up and reject this assault on Alabamians’ freedom to vote by vetoing this dangerous anti-voter legislation.”
