WASHINGTON – Ahead of tonight’s State of the Union address, Stand Up America is urging President Biden to make democracy a central focus of his message to the American people, addressing the threat posed by MAGA extremists and laying out a clear path forward to protect our democracy and the freedom to vote.
Stand Up America’s Founder and President, Sean Eldridge, issued the following statement ahead of Biden’s address:
“The State of the Union address provides an important platform for President Biden to highlight the grave threats facing our democracy and the rule of law. Biden should level with the American people about the growing attacks by MAGA extremists on Americans’ fundamental freedoms, including our freedom to vote.
“Across the country, Republicans are working to erect barriers to the ballot box, including right now in Alabama, where MAGA lawmakers are trying to criminalize helping someone vote absentee in an election. Biden should highlight these attacks on our freedom to vote and remind Congress and the American people that we need to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act to ensure that every eligible American can participate in our democracy.”
