VICTORY FOR DEMOCRACY: DEMOCRACY CHAMPIONS WIN IN VIRGINIA, DEFEATING A MAGA TAKEOVER OF THE COMMONWEALTH

RICHMOND—Tonight, Stand Up America celebrated progressive candidates winning key legislative elections in Virginia. Democrats retained their majority in the state Senate, which will help protect hard-fought voting rights wins and everyday Virginians’ fundamental freedoms.

Tishan Weerasooriya, Senior Associate for Policy and Political Affairs at Stand Up America, issued the following statement on tonight’s victory:

“MAGA extremists set their sights on a complete takeover of the state government that would have threatened Virginians’ fundamental freedoms, including abortion access and the freedom to vote. Virginians made their voices heard at the ballot box and sent a clear message that extremism has no place in the Commonwealth.

“In a rebuke of Governor Youngkin, Virginians elected democracy champions who will stand up for the fundamental freedoms of all Virginians and serve as a check on the MAGA agenda.”  

Stand Up America helped turn out its nearly 11,500 members in Virginia to vote for pro-democracy candidates in this year’s legislative election, and Stand Up America’s volunteers sent nearly 39,000 handwritten letters to Virginia voters through Vote Forward, urging them to turn out and vote.
