Stand Up America Ran Six-Figure Digital Ad Campaign in Support of Judge Dan McCaffery

HARRISBURG — Tonight, Stand Up America celebrated Judge Dan McCaffery’s victory over extreme, anti-abortion judge Carolyn Carluccio in Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court race. While the race doesn’t change the partisan balance on the seven-seat high court, a Carluccio victory would have narrowed the pro-democracy and pro-choice majority to a one-vote margin. This would have raised the stakes for 2025, with several additional liberal judges facing reelection, and created contentious fights on redistricting, abortion, and voting rights. 

Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following statement after the race was called:

Tonight, Pennsylvania voters built a firewall against MAGA extremists who threaten our democracy and our fundamental freedoms. Pennsylvania’s high court rules on critical issues impacting everyday Pennsylvanians, like voting rights, abortion access, and the environment, and Judge Dan McCaffery was the only candidate on the ballot willing to stand up for our democracy and our rights. 

“Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court could play a critical role in protecting our democracy in 2024 and beyond, and McCaffery will champion the rights of all citizens, including our freedom to vote. State courts play a critical role in defending our democracy and access to the ballot box for all eligible Americans, which is why Stand Up America will continue to leverage our nearly 2 million members across the country to elect democracy defenders to the bench.”

In 2015, Democrats flipped the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. This victory laid the groundwork for a progressive majority that would subsequently champion the protection of voting rights, advocate for fair maps, and ensure the integrity of election outcomes. In 2018, the Court demonstrated its commitment to democracy by blocking a Republican-drawn congressional map, ruling that it constituted an unconstitutional gerrymander. The liberal majority Supreme Court election could play a key role in safeguarding the state from future efforts to overthrow our elections. 

This fall, Stand Up America helped turn out its 22,000 members in Pennsylvania to vote for McCaffery, mobilized volunteers to text over 130,000 voters in Pennsylvania, engaged celebrity influencers like Ariana DeBose, Piper Perabo and Andy Cohen to post about this important race, and ran a six-figure digital ad campaign that was seen nearly 4.5 million times by voters.
