Incumbent has a proven track record of standing up for Michigan voters

This cycle, Stand Up America’s members took hundreds of thousands of actions in support of Democracy Defenders in Michigan

LANSING — Tonight, Stand Up America celebrated the reelection of Jocelyn Benson as Michigan Secretary of State. Benson defeated MAGA candidate and election denier Kristina Karamo, ensuring Michigan’s elections will remain free and fair and Michiganders choose their leaders, not the other way around. Voters in the Great Lakes State also passed Proposal 2, a constitutional amendment to protect the freedom to vote and depoliticize the process of certifying election results. 

This cycle, Stand Up America’s community members sent nearly a million peer-to-peer text messages to Michigan voters to educate them on the stakes of the Secretary of State race and the importance of passing Proposal 2. Stand Up America’s digital ads contrasting Jocelyn Benson and Kristina Karamo were viewed more than 7 million times by Michigan voters. Additionally, our volunteers sent over 12,000 personal letters to Michigan voters to get out the vote, and hundreds of letters to the editor in support of Benson and Proposal 2.

Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following statement on tonight’s victory: 

“Tonight, Michiganders across the political spectrum came together to re-elect a Secretary of State who will protect their fundamental freedoms and the will of the people. Jocelyn Benson has a proven track record of standing up for Michigan voters, even as she faced violent threats and intimidation from MAGA Republicans. She led efforts to modernize Michigan’s voter registration system, send absentee ballot applications to every voter, and put secure ballot drop boxes in hundreds of communities across the state. 

“With the passage of Proposal 2, Secretary of State Benson will be empowered to continue her efforts to protect voting rights and make Michigan’s elections more accessible for all Michiganders. 

“We’re proud of the work that Stand Up America’s community did to help elect Benson and pass Proposal 2. Our members sent thousands of handwritten personal letters to voters, texted over a million Michigan voters, and submitted hundreds of letters to the editor in support of Proposal 2 and Benson’s reelection.

“Congratulations to Secretary Benson and to the incredible organizers on the ground who worked tirelessly to make these victories possible.”
