WASHINGTON, D.C. — Last night, the Supreme Court dealt a massive blow to reproductive freedom and Roe v. Wade by declining to block a Texas law that prohibits abortions after just six weeks of pregnancy—and deputizing private citizens to enforce it.

Stand Up America Executive Director Christina Harvey responded to the news:

“The Supreme Court’s decision to permit this unconstitutional law is yet another frightening example of how the extreme right-wing supermajority of the court cannot be trusted to protect our fundamental freedoms, including the rights of pregnant people to control their own bodies.

“Our rights—from the right to vote freely to the right to bodily agency—are under attack. It’s long past time that Congress leveraged its checks and balances against the broken Supreme Court. Congress must rebalance the Supreme Court by passing the Judiciary Act of 2021 to add an additional four seats to the court.

“Every single Democrat should cosponsor the Judiciary Act. There’s not a second to lose, and it’s high time Democrats do what they promised they would do if voters handed them the reins: Protect our fundamental rights, and restore balance to our government.”
