Senate Must Pass Voting Legislation Immediately Upon Return from Recess
TEXAS — Today, Republican state legislators in Texas passed the final version of a bill aimed at restricting the freedom to vote in the state, sending the bill to Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) desk to be signed into law. The passage of the bill comes after a prolonged battle by the state’s Democratic lawmakers to prevent the anti-voting bill from becoming law.
Stand Up America President & Founder Sean Eldridge responded to the news:
“Democratic lawmakers in Texas went to Washington multiple times begging the Senate to pass the For the People Act to stop this voter suppression legislation—and so far their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The passage of S.B. 1 in Texas today should be a dire alarm for lawmakers in Congress. Unless federal lawmakers pass voting legislation like the For The People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, opponents of a free & fair democracy—like the Texas Republicans who forced this legislation into law—will win, and millions of Americans will lose their freedom to vote.
There’s no time to lose. The Senate’s first act upon its return from recess must be to protect our democracy.”
