AUGUSTA—Today, Maine joined the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, which would ensure that the candidate who wins the popular vote becomes president. So far, including Maine, 17 states and Washington D.C., with 209 electoral votes in total, have joined the compact. The compact will go into effect when states representing at least 270 electoral votes adopt it.

This session, Stand Up America supported the work of Democracy Maine, League of Women Voters Maine, and National Popular Vote Compact organizers to advocate for this legislation. Stand Up America members in Maine sent hundreds of emails to their state representatives in support of joining the National Popular Vote Compact.

Stand Up America’s Senior Associate of Policy & Political Affairs, Sunwoo Oh, released the following statement:

“Today marks an important victory for Maine voters and our democracy. The candidate who wins the most votes on Election Day should be the person who walks into the White House on Inauguration Day. With Maine joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact, we are one step closer to ensuring that is a reality.

“We are grateful for the support throughout the legislature for this bill and look forward to building on Maine’s leadership to encourage other states to prioritize similar legislation.”
