STAND UP AMERICA STATEMENT ON CHRIS CHRISTIE PRESIDENTIAL ANNOUNCEMENT
WASHINGTON, D.C. —Today, former Governor of New Jersey Chris Christie announced he will run for president in 2024. Christie joins a number of GOP MAGA-cronies for the Republican nomination, including former President Donald Trump, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, South Carolina Senator Tim Scott, and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following statement:
“Americans need a leader who will defend our fundamental freedoms, including our freedom to vote, from MAGA Republicans’ relentless pursuit of power. Chris Christie’s stances on voting rights, reproductive freedom, and marriage equality prevent him from being such a leader.
“Christie’s record clearly demonstrates he is no supporter of creating a more inclusive democracy and protecting Americans’ fundamental freedoms. From bragging about defunding Planned Parenthood to vetoing legislation to increase voting access, Christie has shown us that he would rather infringe on Americans’ freedoms than safeguard them. That’s why our community is prepared to fight to make sure neither Christie nor his MAGA comrades are elected in 2024.”
Chris Christie has been an opponent of reproductive justice, marriage equality, and expanding voting rights access. As Governor of New Jersey, Christie defunded women’s health services, vetoed a bill to automatically register voters, vetoed a measure to expand early voting, opposed marriage equality, and endorsed a 20-week abortion ban.
Stand Up America was founded in 2016 as a digital-first grassroots community working to resist Donald Trump and his cronies’ corruption, racism, and threats to our democracy. From 2017 to 2021, our members made 1.7 million calls to Congress to oppose the MAGA extremist agenda.
In 2020, our volunteers contacted 25 million voters to help defeat Trump and elect Joe Biden to the presidency. During the 2022 midterms, our team helped build a firewall for democracy ahead of 2024 by electing pro-democracy Secretaries of State in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, and Nevada, passing key democracy ballot initiatives, and mobilizing our members to get out the vote for progressive candidates nationwide.
In 2024, our community will continue mobilizing to elect candidates who will stand up for our freedoms and our democracy.
