WASHINGTON D.C. — Stand Up America Executive Director Christina Harvey issued the following statement after the Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge brought by two Black Mississippians against their state’s racist felony disenfranchisement law:
“The Supreme Court’s refusal to hear this challenge is an affront to the whopping 10 percent of Mississippi’s voting population whose freedom to vote has been stripped away by one of the most draconian disenfranchisement laws in the country.
“Though it is not surprising, it is still deeply disappointing. Felony disenfranchisement is an archaic and racist policy that was designed to stop Black people from voting, and that’s just what it’s doing in Mississippi, where the state government disenfranchises 16% of the Black voting age population. Today, the ultra-right Supreme Court has guaranteed that the law in Mississippi can continue to work as intended.”
Stand Up America supports the efforts of state lawmakers and advocates fighting to restore the voting rights of justice-impacted people. In 2023, Stand Up America’s community members sent thousands of emails to their lawmakers in support of rights restoration legislation, helping to re-enfranchise over 57,000 individuals in New Mexico and Minnesota.
