AUSTIN – Stand Up America Executive Director Christina Harvey issued the following statement after Republican state legislators passed a bill allowing the Texas Secretary of State to assume control over election administration in Harris County, raising serious concerns about representation and potential voter suppression.
“SB1933 is nothing more than a MAGA power grab designed to give Texas Republicans control over elections in the largest Democratic city in the state. This bill directly threatens the Black and Hispanic voters who have defined Harris County’s political landscape and who have consistently rejected the GOP’s extreme right-wing candidates.
“Instead of focusing on the issues their constituents care about most––like the economy, healthcare, and gun violence prevention—Republican legislators used the power entrusted to them by the voters to attack our democracy and freedom to vote. Texans deserve better from their elected officials.”
SB 1933, already passed by the Texas Senate, was passed by the Texas House today, and will now return to the Senate for conference or concurrence.
Stand Up America’s members in Texas made more than 500 calls to their state lawmakers since Friday, urging them to vote against SB1933. In 2021, Stand Up America’s Texas community made nearly 2,500 calls in opposition to Texas Republicans’ anti-voter measures.
