Stand Up America Applauds Chairman Neal for Filing Lawsuit for Trump’s Tax Returns
NEW YORK — After Stand Up America and coalition partners drove more than 10,000 constituent calls urging swift action to get Trump’s tax returns, House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal has filed a lawsuit to compel the Treasury Department to furnish Donald Trump’s personal and business tax returns. In response, Stand Up America spokesperson Ryan Thomas released the following statement:
“We commend Chairman Neal for taking this necessary action to finally get answers on behalf of the American people about what Donald Trump is hiding—and who he may be beholden to. While this process has been prolonged by the Trump administration’s stonewalling, we are hopeful that the court will swiftly compel Secretary Mnuchin and Commissioner Rettig to comply with this lawful request.
“Stand Up America and coalition partners have been organizing since Trump’s inauguration to get Trump’s tax returns—and this lawsuit is a victory for the 125,000 people who marched through the streets and rallied in the rain to demand their release two years ago.
“No one is above the law. And Congress must not allow administration officials like Mnuchin—and certainly not Trump himself—to think they are.”
In January 2019, Stand Up America joined several progressive groups in sending a letter to Chairman Neal demanding he immediately request Donald Trump’s personal and business tax returns from the Treasury Department. Since Secretary Mnuchin refused to comply with this lawful request, Stand Up America has continually renewed calls on Chairman Neal to immediately file a lawsuit to force compliance.
