WASHINGTON, DC — This morning, the House of Representatives will vote on the SAVE Act (H.R.22), a bill that would impose sweeping new restrictions on voter registration and make it harder for millions of eligible American citizens to participate in our democracy. According to the Brennan Center, more than 21 million Americans do not have proof of citizenship documents, like a birth certificate or passport, readily available.

Stand Up America’s Managing Director of Policy and Political Affairs, Brett Edkins, made the following remarks ahead of the vote:

“Let’s be clear –– the SAVE Act is an attempt to trick us into making it harder for millions of Americans to cast their votes. Non-citizen voting is already illegal, but House Republicans are using fear and disinformation to pass anti-voter laws that hurt U.S. citizens.

“Despite its name, the SAVE Act does nothing to safeguard our elections. Instead, it demands that U.S. citizens go, in-person, to the DMV or local government office with a passport or birth certificate with their current name on it to register to vote or update their voter registration.

“If you don’t have a passport or if you changed your name when you got married, Trump and his allies are trying to make it harder for you to vote. This unnecessary barrier could disenfranchise millions of Americans—particularly seniors, rural voters, veterans, and married women who have changed their names. It must be defeated.”
