WASHINGTON, D.C —Today, Donald Trump issued pardons and commutations for approximately 1,500 rioters who participated in the January 6th attack on the Capitol. Pardoning and commuting the sentences of these convicted criminals is one of Trump’s first official acts as President.

These aren’t only minor offenders. Some January 6 rioters viciously bludgeoned police officers, electroshocked officersripped off gas masks, and sprayed them with chemicals. One defendant threw an explosive device that temporarily deafened 25 officers. Among those reportedly being released is Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio, who was convicted of seditious conspiracy.

Stand Up America’s President and Founder, Sean Eldridge, issued the following statement in response to the pardons and commutations:

“Just hours after promising to bring ‘law and order back to our cities,’ Trump pardoned more than a thousand January 6th rioters and put violent offenders right back in our neighborhoods – people who assaulted police officers, destroyed property, and tried to overturn our freedom to vote.

“By giving January 6th rioters a free pass, Trump is rewarding political violence and making all of us less safe. No one should be above the law in the United States of America, and our first responders and the American people deserve better than this.”
