WASHINGTON—One year ago today, following shocking reports of Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito accepting luxury gifts and travel from billionaires, the Supreme Court adopted a voluntary code of conduct–one without an enforcement mechanism. Since then, the crisis of confidence in the Court has only deepened, with new revelations of conflicts of interest.
Stand Up America’s Managing Director of Policy & Political Affairs, Brett Edkins, issued the following statement on the anniversary:
“The Supreme Court’s weak and unenforceable code of conduct has done nothing to rein in the Court’s favoritism to conservative special interests and the rich and powerful. Earlier this year, the right-wing majority on the Court overlooked glaring conflicts of interest to grant Donald Trump immunity from criminal prosecution. Over the next four years, we’re in for unprecedented levels of corruption from Trump and his allies on the bench.
“The Roberts’ Court is unwilling and unable to hold itself accountable. Its hollow code of conduct will continue to let Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, Brett Kavanaugh, and the other justices accept lavish gifts and luxury vacations from billionaires bringing cases before the Court. Americans deserve reform and a Supreme Court they can trust. Sadly, Republican senators opposed a binding code of ethics when they had the chance to pass it earlier this year. Despite Republican opposition, we will continue to demand accountability and transparency on our nation’s highest Court.”
