As Nevadans recover from another devastating wildfire season, the urgency of climate action has never been clearer. Just last month, the Davis Fire forced the evacuation of 14,000 Washoe County residents negatively impacted by air quality across much of the state. With Election Day just days away, Nevadans face a pivotal choice: Kamala Harris’ commitment to tackling the climate crisis or Donald Trump’s agenda to dismantle protections critical to Nevadans’ health and well-being.
Donald Trump’s dismissive stance toward the climate crisis, which he once quipped would only result in “more beachfront property” doesn’t bode well for Nevadans who are already living with the consequences of climate change. Project 2025, the Republican blueprint for a second Trump presidency, would undercut climate change relief and emergency response, leaving Silver State residents more vulnerable than ever.
Project 2025’s sweeping changes to the federal government would dramatically affect Nevadans in the face of extreme weather, including record heat and wildfires. The plan envisions dismantling the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration (NOAA) and eliminating the National Weather Service’s public forecasting role, shifting the agency’s focus to providing data to private companies. Earlier this month, the National Weather Service issued a ‘red flag warning’ for 11 western states including Nevada, allowing residents to prepare for the possibility of life-threatening wildfires. Critical alerts like this could cease to exist if Donald Trump retakes the presidency.
Project 2025 also proposes ending the Small Business Administration’s disaster loan program, which provides support to families and businesses impacted by extreme weather events. Wildfire relief is one of the most common weather events of the loan program. Without it, the burden of recovery would fall solely on Nevada’s small businesses.
With climate disasters on the rise, Nevadans must cast their ballot for the candidate that takes the effects of climate change seriously. Kamala Harris has long been an ally on environmental issues. From creating an environmental justice office as a district attorney in San Francisco, to casting the tie-breaking vote for the largest climate investment bill in American history, Kamala Harris understands that the climate crisis is not just an “existential threat”, but a crisis affecting American families. Harris has a proven record of combating climate change and keeping families safe and healthy.
