TERM Act reaches 50+ cosponsors

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As of today, 53 members of the House of Representatives have signed on to cosponsor the Supreme Court Tenure Establishment and Retirement Modernization Act of 2023 (TERM Act; H.R.5566), signaling growing momentum for the legislation.

The TERM Act, sponsored by Representative Hank Johnson, would create 18-year terms for current and future Supreme Court justices and provide two appointments to the Court in each 4-year presidential term.

A growing number of prominent House Democrats have co-sponsored the TERM Act, including Oversight Committee Ranking Member Jamie Raskin, Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Jerry Nadler, Rules Committee Ranking Member James McGovern, Congressional Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal, Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Nanette Barragán, Senior Judiciary Committee member Adam Schiff, Representative Jasmine Crockett, and Representative Maxwell Frost. The complete list of 53 cosponsors can be found here.

Last week, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Planned Parenthood Action Fund joined more than 60 organizations endorsing the TERM Act.

Stand Up America Founder and President Sean Eldridge issued the following statement:

“No one should have unchecked power for life. That’s why 49 of 50 states have term limits, elections, or mandatory retirement ages for their top judges.

“A single justice who sits on the Supreme Court for decades can shape federal law for generations and impact the fundamental freedoms of millions of Americans. Term limits would provide the Court with fresh perspectives and ensure that it is more representative of the American people.

“With more than 50 co-sponsors of the TERM Act and the President and Vice President embracing Supreme Court term limits, there’s unquestionable momentum behind this critical reform. We’re grateful to these leaders for working to restore Americans’ faith in our highest Court. Congress has the power to serve as a check on the Supreme Court, and it’s time for them to use it.”

Since 2021, Stand Up America has been a leading group advocating for Supreme Court reform. Stand Up America conducted a national poll earlier this year, which found that an overwhelming majority of voters want Congress to enact 18-year term limits for current and future justices. Stand Up America’s members have driven nearly 900,000 constituent calls and emails to Congress in support of Supreme Court reform legislation, including term limits for current and future justices and a binding code of ethics. In June, Stand Up America launched a Supreme Court Voter campaign, a seven-figure digital campaign aimed at educating and mobilizing voters around the stakes of the Supreme Court for this election.
