STAND UP AMERICA CALLS ON GOVERNOR SUNUNU TO VETO ANTI-DEMOCRATIC LEGISLATION AND PROTECT THE VOTE

CONCORD—This week, MAGA Republicans in New Hampshire’s legislature sent HB 1569 to Governor Chris Sununu for his signature. HB 1569 would make New Hampshire’s voter registration system one of the most restrictive in the country, and require a passport, birth certificate, or naturalization papers every time someone registers to vote or simply updates their registration with a new address. This means voters who have moved or who were unknowingly removed from the voter rolls would not be able to vote on Election Day if they don’t bring their birth certificate or passport with them.

Stand Up America’s Managing Director for Policy, Brett Edkins, released the following statement:

“This voter suppression bill is a solution in search of a problem. Governor Sununu himself said that New Hampshire’s elections are ‘secure, safe, and reliable.’ Lawmakers in New Hampshire should be working to ensure all voters can cast their ballots, not creating barriers to confuse and burden them. If enacted, this bill will suppress the voice of thousands of eligible voters in New Hampshire.

“Granite Staters deserve better from their elected officials. Governor Sununu should swiftly veto this anti-democratic legislation and stop his party from undermining the freedom to vote.” 

This session, Stand Up America joined partners like New Hampshire Campaign for Voting Rights / America Votes NH and 603 Forward to oppose the legislation. Stand Up America’s members in the state have driven over 300 constituent calls and emails to lawmakers opposing anti-democratic legislation in New Hampshire.
