Jet-setting justices with billionaire pals are deeply out of touch with struggling Americans
WASHINGTON, D.C.—Today, the Supreme Court ruled to allow the City of Grants Pass to impose criminal penalties on unhoused individuals for existing on public property. The ruling is a significant erosion of unhoused Americans’ constitutional rights and opens the floodgates to criminalizing the unhoused across the U.S.
Stand Up America’s Communications Manager, Tracy Adair, released the following statement on today’s decision:
“Today’s decision shows how little the MAGA supermajority cares about struggling Americans. It is unfathomably cruel to punish unhoused individuals for existing on public property when they have nowhere else to go.
“Maybe the right-wing justices could empathize with the most vulnerable Americans if they spent less time jet-setting on luxury vacations on their wealthy benefactors’ dime.
“We cannot stand by and wait to see which of our fundamental rights and freedoms the justices go after next. We will be mobilizing millions of Americans to turn out this year as Supreme Court voters and defeat Donald Trump. That is the only way to protect our fundamental freedoms for decades to come.”
On Monday, the second anniversary of the controversial Dobbs v. Jackson decision, Stand Up America launched a seven-figure Supreme Court Voter campaign aimed at educating and mobilizing voters on the impact the next president will have on the future of the U.S. Supreme Court. With four of the nine current justices set to be in their 70s by 2025, the next president may have the opportunity to appoint their replacements, potentially reshaping the Court for generations to come.
