ST. PAUL — Last night, the Minnesota Senate voted to advance the Democracy for the People Act (SF 3), legislation to implement automatic voter registration, prohibit foreign corporations from donating to political campaigns and spending on elections, and expand access for voters who speak English as a second language. SF 3 has been passed by the House and Senate and will now make its way to Governor Walz’s desk to be signed into law within the week.

Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following statement:

“Last year, Minnesotans from across the political spectrum came together at the ballot box to defend our democracy and elect representatives who would protect the freedom to vote. Today, the Minnesota Senate did just that by passing the Democracy for the People Act. Strengthening the ability to vote in the North Star State ensures Minnesotans can advocate for change on crucial issues like reproductive justice, climate change, and housing.

“Last night, legislators in the Minnesota Senate showed their commitment to safeguarding Minnesotans’ ability to choose their own leaders. The Democracy for the People Act will enact automatic voter registration, prohibit foreign corporations from donating to political campaigns, and expand language access for voters who speak English as a second language. These reforms will strengthen democracy in Minnesota and help ensure political power remains in the hands of everyday citizens. We were proud to partner with the We Choose Us coalition to help pass this critical democracy legislation, and we look forward to Governor Tim Walz signing it into law.”

This year, Stand Up America partnered with the We Choose Us coalition to advocate for passage of the Democracy for the People Act. Stand Up America volunteers sent over 200,000 peer to peer text messages to Minnesota voters to educate them about the bill. Our nearly 10,000 members in Minnesota sent nearly 1,600 constituent emails to their state legislators urging them to pass this crucial legislation.
