SANTA FE — Today, the New Mexico State Senate passed HB4, legislation to expand voting rights by allowing New Mexicans to opt into a permanent mail-in voting list, restoring voting rights for over 17,000 New Mexicans affected by discriminatory felony disenfranchisement laws, and improving ballot access for Tribal communities.
Stand Up America’s Deputy Political Director, Reggie Thedford, commented on the passage:
“Today, legislators in the New Mexico Senate demonstrated their commitment to cultivating a stronger democracy. New Mexicans deserve a democracy that works for everyone, and the New Mexico Voting Rights Act will address long-standing disparities in voting access to ensure every eligible voter can exercise their freedom to vote.
“New Mexicans’ ability to have a say at the ballot box on issues impacting their communities–from the economy to reproductive justice and climate change–will be protected and improved. The New Mexico Senate sent a clear message that the best way to protect democracy is to expand it.”
