SANTA FE, NM — As the New Mexico House of Representatives prepares to vote on the Voting Rights Act, advocates from across the state joined together at the State Capitol to call on their legislators to pass this crucial legislation. HB 4 will strengthen the freedom to vote by giving voters more options for how to cast their ballot, improving ballot access for Tribal communities, and restoring voting rights for more than 17,000 New Mexicans locked out of the electoral process by discriminatory felony disenfranchisement laws.
Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following statement on this historic package:
“Over the past year New Mexico has been at the center of threats to overturn the will of voters and shocking acts of political violence. Undeterred, local voting rights advocates are renewing calls for legislators to ensure that every eligible voter can participate and every vote is counted. The New Mexico Voting Rights Act would protect the right of every eligible voter to access the ballot box, whether you’re a working parent struggling to find time to register, a returning citizen who has been left out of the democratic process altogether, or a Tribal member whose unique needs are often ignored when it’s time to make voting policy.
“With gridlock in Congress, lawmakers in New Mexico have an historic opportunity to protect the freedom to vote during this legislative session and set an example for the rest of the country. Leaders in the House should seize this opportunity and swiftly pass HB 4. A thriving and truly-representative democracy is only possible when every eligible citizen can cast their ballot without barriers or intimidation.”
