“Tomorrow night, the man with the biggest soapbox on the planet will give his most-watched of the year, and he needs to make it count.”
WASHINGTON, D.C. — As President Biden prepares to deliver his second State of the Union address, Stand Up America urged him to highlight the ongoing dangers to American democracy and the freedom to vote.
Stand Up America’s Executive Director, Christina Harvey, issued the following statement ahead of Biden’s address:
“Two years into the Biden presidency, our democracy is not out of the woods. MAGA Republicans continue their attacks on our freedom to vote, and the instigators of the January 6th insurrection still have not been held accountable. In fact, many continue to serve as Members of Congress and have been elevated to powerful positions by Speaker McCarthy.
“While democracy prevailed in the midterm elections, it only did so because we ignored the political pundits who said voters didn’t care and never stopped talking about what was at stake.
“Tomorrow night, the man with the biggest soapbox on the planet will give his most-watched speech of the year, and he needs to make it count. If Biden goes silent on democracy, it will send a message that the danger has passed—and it clearly has not.”
