Democrats’ victories across the country demonstrate democracy is a major concern for voters
WASHINGTON — As vote counting finishes, democracy defenders have been declared the winners in key Secretary of State races in the Southwest. In Arizona, veteran Adrian Fontes defeated insurrectionist MAGA candidate Mark Finchem. Cisco Aguilar was also elected Nevada’s Secretary of State over election denier Jim Marchant. Additionally, Senators Catherine Cortez Masto and Mark Kelly were reelected, securing a Democratic majority in the United States Senate. These candidates join other democracy defenders winning Secretary of State races in Michigan and Minnesota in a historic election for democracy.
In Arizona, voters also defeated ballot measure, 128 which would have made it easier for legislators and the courts to overrule decisions made by voters. Stand Up America’s volunteers texted more than half a million Arizona voters to warn them about this proposal.
In Oakland, California, voters passed ballot measure W, a historic campaign finance reform initiative that will create the country’s second Democracy Dollars program and model how we can increase transparency in our elections and reduce the influence of big money.
Stand Up America’s President and Founder, Sean Eldridge, issued the following statement:
“Democracy was on the ballot — and democracy prevailed. Voters across the country showed election-denying MAGA Republicans that we can see through their lies and fearmongering and want leaders who will protect our freedoms. With democracy defenders elected as Secretaries of State in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, and Nevada and the Senate in Democratic control, we’re building a firewall for democracy in 2024 and beyond.”
Stand Up America’s members mailed more than 250,000 letters to their fellow Americans, sent more than 2 million peer-to-peer texts, volunteered for nearly 5,500 shifts, and submitted more than 6,000 letters to the editors in support of democracy defenders and key ballot initiatives. Stand Up America’s digital ads contrasting Secretary of State candidates and registering voters in key states reached over 30 million voters.
