Stand Up America’s Reggie Thedford: “It’s time for Congress to assume its constitutional duty to check and balance the now-corrupted Supreme Court.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. — This morning, the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority continued to execute its partisan agenda by siding with fossil fuel corporations over the American people and dangerously limiting the federal government’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

“Every person in America should be concerned that in the midst of destructive forest fires, floods, tornadoes and hurricanes, the Supreme Court chose to gut the federal government’s authority to rein in corporations whose practices are accelerating climate change. This partisan decision will have a devastating impact on millions of families who are already seeing their homes destroyed, their air polluted, and their water contaminated. What’s more, Black, brown, and poor communities are disproportionately harmed by these climate disasters wrought by greedy corporations choosing profit over people, and empowered by the Trump-stacked Supreme Court.

“Congress must assume its constitutional duty to check and balance the now-corrupted Supreme Court. Our representatives should pass the Judiciary Act to add four justices to the Court and restore it to its intended purpose: upholding the Constitution and protecting Americans’ fundamental rights—to clean air, clean water, and a safe living environment.”
