WASHINGTON — As Americans’ frustration with the Supreme Court’s conservative supermajority grows in the wake of the Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a group of progressive organizations are launching “Four More,” a national campaign to rally Americans behind the issue of Supreme Court expansion.
The new project is a joint effort by Stand Up America, Indivisible, Take Back the Court, Demand Justice, and People’s Parity Project aimed at highlighting the detrimental impact of last week’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Center and other recent Supreme Court decisions, and build support for the Judiciary Act, which would add four seats to the court to restore ideological balance.
The “Four More” campaign will build momentum for expanding the Supreme Court by:
- Educating the public on the history of Court expansion and what’s at stake,
- Bringing together national and state experts and advocates to underscore how recent Supreme Court rulings, including last week’s decisions overturning Roe and expanding gun rights, will impact the lives of everyday Americans, and
- Mobilizing grassroots, constituent-based pressure on key Democratic lawmakers urging them to support the Judiciary Act.
“Our nation’s highest court is broken, and we must act urgently to protect our fundamental rights from partisan actors on the bench. Congress has the constitutional power to balance the ideological scales of the court by passing the Judiciary Act,” said Christina Harvey, Executive Director of Stand Up America. “But first, we’ll need to mobilize the American people to ramp up the pressure on their representatives to support court expansion. We can have a Supreme Court that shares our values and respects the Constitution – that’s what this campaign is all about.”
“One by one, the Court’s right-wing justices are repealing the progress of the entire last century and replacing it with their own radical, out-of-touch, deeply regressive policies,” said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, executive director of Take Back the Court Action Fund. “If there was ever a doubt, it’s now crystal clear: This Court does not serve the American people. The conservative justices have utter contempt for us. What they want is to rule us. But in a true democracy, power rests with the people — and the only way to take our power back is to take back the Court. We’re calling on every member of Congress who considers themselves a democrat — big D or small — to back the Judiciary Act, which would restore balance to the Court by adding four seats. Anyone offering less is not serious about securing our rights or our future.”
“I want to start by acknowledging what the ultra-conservative supermajority of the Supreme Court won’t—millions of Americans will suffer and many will die because of what this Court has done,” said Katie O’Connor, Deputy Chief Counsel at Demand Justice. “Our democracy is hurting, and if we don’t act with the urgency this moment requires, we’re poised for another 30 years of antidemocratic rule. We don’t have time to wait. Adding four seats to the Court is the only reform that would immediately address the threat this out-of-balance Supreme Court poses.”
“This Court has spent the last week shoving the country into a time machine back to the 1700s,” said Meagan Hatcher-Mays, Director of Democracy Policy at Indivisible. “The fact that this conservative majority feels more comfortable with the status quo in the 18th century as opposed to the 21st is a huge red flag for all of us who were not considered full, autonomous human beings worthy of liberty and entitled to freedom when the Constitution was originally drafted. But the conservative justices won’t stop there. They’re already gearing up to revoke other fundamental constitutional rights like access to contraception and same-sex marriage. This is not sustainable. Something must be done about this Court, and the best thing Congress can do right now to protect and restore our constitutional rights is to pass the Judiciary Act and add four seats to the bench. The majority of this country wants to continue living in 2022. We won’t be dragged back to the dark ages by extremist Trump justices.”
