WASHINGTON, D.C. — Tomorrow marks the 49th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark ruling in Roe v. Wade (1973). Stand Up America’s Executive Director Christina Harvey commented on the need for Congress to recommit to preserving Roe:

Roe v. Wade marked a crucial moment in the fight for reproductive rights and the ability of women and pregnant people to determine the trajectory of their own lives. The Supreme Court’s recent actions threaten that progress and reek of partisan politics. It is clear the current Court has been hijacked by right-wing political operatives hellbent on denying women their constitutional right to choose.

“In the last year, six states have introduced draconian abortion ban bills, like S.B. 1 in Texas. We cannot expect the conservative supermajority on the Supreme Court to protect abortion rights. The American people need a balanced Court that will listen to its citizens without an agenda. Congress must pass legislation to codify abortion rights and also restore balance to the Supreme Court by passing the Judiciary Act of 2021. Only then can we ensure the reproductive freedoms established by Roe remain intact.”
