Failed Senate Rules Change Vote is Devastating Setback for Democracy

Senators Manchin and Sinema sided with GOP at the expense of our freedom to vote

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sean Eldridge, President & Founder of Stand Up America, issued the following statement after the Senate failed to pass a rules change that would have allowed the chamber to pass critical voting rights legislation.

“Rather than heeding the calls of their constituents, Senators Manchin and Sinema sided with Senate Republicans to preserve the Jim Crow filibuster at the expense of our freedom to vote. This is a shameful dereliction of duty and a devastating setback for our democracy.

“Every senator takes an oath to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States from all enemies, foreign and domestic.’ In spite of this sacred promise, 52 senators voted to do nothing as the ‘Big Lie’ continues to take hold, voters’ rights are stripped away, and trusted local election officials are displaced by partisan actors.

“Like generations before us, we will not give up the fight to protect the freedom to vote. We will continue the struggle at the federal and state levels for as long as it takes. And when November comes around, we will elect leaders who are willing to live up to their oath of office and defend our democracy.”
