WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, in a 220-208 vote, the House passed the Protecting Our Democracy Act, legislation that will restore accountability to the Oval Office and ensure no president is above the law. The bill would limit the president’s pardon power, reassert Congress’s power of the purse, help prevent foreign interference in our elections, and require the president and vice president to release their tax returns, among other provisions.
Sean Eldridge, President & Founder of Stand Up America commented on the passage of the Protecting Our Democracy Act:
“Thanks to the leadership of Rep. Adam Schiff and many others, the House has taken the critical first step to ensure that no president is above the law. The Protecting Our Democracy Act would provide transparency for the American people by finally requiring presidential candidates to release their tax returns, and it would prevent future executive abuses of power by limiting the president’s pardon power, depoliticizing presidential transitions, and ensuring no president can profit from public office.
“The Protecting Our Democracy Act would ensure that no future president, of any party, is able to abuse the office for personal gain. It’s time for lawmakers of both parties in the Senate to take up the mantle and swiftly pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act. The integrity of our country’s most powerful office is at stake.”
