WASHINGTON, D.C. — Stand Up America’s Founder & President Sean Eldridge released the following statement calling out the Senate for leaving Washington for the end-of-year recess without passing legislation to protect and strengthen voting rights:
“This year, Democratic senators have repeatedly declared that our democracy is in peril. They have also repeatedly declared how necessary and urgent it is that we protect our democracy and the right to vote. But their inaction speaks louder than their words.
“The American people elected Democrats to Congress to protect our democracy and restore integrity to our nation’s institutions. Yet, our senators spent this whole year allowing a Jim Crow-era procedural rule to stand between the American people and our freedom to vote—enough is enough.
“There are serious consequences of delay, as partisan gerrymandering rages across the country and far too many states begin to implement voter suppression laws. It’s time for the Senate to prioritize passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act before it’s too late.”
