Reps. Adam Schiff and Mondaire Jones Break Down Their Plan to Prevent Presidential Corruption

One of the most powerful lessons we learned from Donald Trump’s presidency was that we don’t have adequate safeguards to prevent presidential corruption.

On November 17, 2021, Stand Up America Founder and President Sean Eldridge spoke with Representatives Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Mondaire Jones (D-NY) about the Protecting Our Democracy Act and how it would prevent future presidents from abusing their power. Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen, and Cerin Lindgrensavage, Counsel for Protect Democracy, also joined the conversation.

SUPPORT PODA!

We need bold reforms to make sure the highest office isn’t a hotbed of corruption.

The Protecting Our Democracy Act (PODA) would ensure that no president is above the law by ending self-serving pardons, preventing presidents from profiting from office, and ensuring presidents can be prosecuted for wrongdoing. And it would finally require presidential candidates to disclose their tax returns!

Send an email and demand the House of Representatives pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act to ensure future presidents can’t abuse their power. Make your voice heard now:

We send a president to the White House to serve the American people, not themselves. No president, regardless of party, should be able to line their pockets, ignore Congress, or exploit loopholes to pursue corrupt, personal agendas.

Passing the Protecting Our Democracy Act (PODA) would make sure that no president is above the law. PODA includes sweeping reforms — that traditionally have earned bipartisan support—to restore checks and balances and prevent future presidents from abusing their power. It would end self-serving pardons, prevent presidents from profiting from office, and ensure presidents can be prosecuted for wrongdoing. It would protect the Department of Justice from political interference from the White House and defend our elections against foreign interference by enhancing criminal penalties for seeking support from foreign actors.

Finally, PODA would strengthen congressional subpoenas and ensure that Congress has the ability to be an effective check on the presidency, something that Republicans and Democrats should be able to agree on. No president, regardless of party, should be able to obstruct and undermine the people’s representatives in Congress or exploit weaknesses in our political system to pursue corrupt, personal agendas.

I urge you to pass the Protecting Our Democracy Act so that we can prevent a corrupt president of any party from abusing the power of their office.
