WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today marks one year since Senate Republicans confirmed Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court just eight days before Election Day, reversing their position that Supreme Court vacancies should not be filled during an election year as they claimed when President Obama nominated Merrick Garland to replace the late Justice Antonin Scalia. In the year since Coney Barrett’s confirmation, Americans have watched the conservative supermajority issue opinions contradicting long-standing precedents and hear cases—including many slated for this term—intended to overturn settled law.
Stand Up America’s Managing Director for Policy & Political Affairs, Brett Edkins, commented on the year since Coney Barrett’s confirmation:
“There’s one key reason Republicans pushed to confirm Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court just eight days before Election Day: to secure right-wing control of the court and repeal reproductive rights.
“Coney Barrett’s confirmation to the Supreme Court solidified the conservative takeover of the bench, enabling the far right to ignore the Constitution and strip away basic rights from all Americans. With arguments beginning next week on crucial cases on reproductive rights and the Second Amendment, the stakes could not be higher.
“It’s time for Congress to restore balance to the Supreme Court to ensure the court decides these cases according to long-standing precedent and constitutional doctrine—not politics. Congress must pass the Judiciary Act and add four seats to the Supreme Court to ensure that our most fundamental rights—from voting rights to reproductive freedom—are not at the mercy of Republican political operatives like Coney Barrett.”
Stand Up America’s Brett Edkins recently submitted testimony to The Presidential Commission of the Supreme Court of the United States in support of expanding the court and enacting other reforms to restore balance and integrity. Mr. Edkins’s testimony can be found here.
