FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Wednesday, April 14, 2021
Today, after Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) and Reps. Hank Johnson (D-GA), Mondaire Jones (D-NY), and Jerry Nadler (D-NY) announced their intention to introduce the Judiciary Act in Congress, Stand Up America Political Director Brett Edkins released the following statement endorsing the bill:
“Our democracy is in crisis. For decades, Republicans have rammed radical right-wing justices onto the Supreme Court in a coordinated effort to defend corporate special interests, attack Americans’ constitutional rights, and erode our democratic institutions.
“Unless Congress works to depoliticize the judiciary and stop activist justices like Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett from striking down policies supported by a majority of Americans, our voting rights, racial justice, and health care will continue to be at risk.
“The Judiciary Act undoes the damage conservatives have done to the highest court by adding four seats to the bench, matching the number of federal appellate courts. Restoring balance to the Supreme Court and ensuring that the bench reflects the growing diversity of our country must be a top priority for Democrats in Congress and the White House.
“Time is of the essence—and we must act before the right-wing justices on the Supreme Court rig the rules of our democracy even further. That starts with both chambers quickly passing the Judiciary Act.”
Earlier this year, Stand Up America joined several organizations—including Demand Justice, Indivisible, Just Democracy, and Take Back the Court—as founding members of the Unrig the Courts coalition, which is working to pressure President Biden and congressional Democrats to enact four key court reforms:
- Expanding the Supreme Court
- Expanding the lower federal courts
- Enacting term limits for Supreme Court justices
- Improving ethics and transparency requirements for Supreme Court justices
