RE: How SUA Fought for Voting Rights in Biden’s First 100 Days

In January, Stand Up America announced a new grassroots campaign to pressure lawmakers at the state and federal level to prioritize building our democracy back better during the first 100 days of President Joe Biden’s term.

Since then, Stand Up America has mobilized our community members to oppose the GOP’s assaults on voting, expand access to the ballot, and pass bold legislation in Congress that would protect the freedom to vote, like the For the People Act (S. 1).

Here’s a look at what our community has achieved during the President Biden’s first 100 days:

Building Momentum To Pass Federal Voting Rights Legislation:

Since launching our campaign, we’ve been one of the loudest grassroots voices in the country advocating for the For the People Act and urging the Senate to not let the filibuster stand in the way of passing critical voting rights legislation.

To help build pressure on the Senate to pass the For the People Act, we’ve texted more than one million constituents of key senators through an innovative, volunteer-driven peer-to-peer texting campaign. We’ve also partnered with other voting rights champions—like Color of Change, End Citizens United // Let America Vote, and Vote Save America—to educate the public about the urgent need to pass federal legislation to expand access to the ballot and protect voting rights to counteract the Republican Party’s assault on our freedom to vote.

Through digital ads running nationally on Facebook, Google, and in publications like Mother Jones, we’ve also reached more than 537,945 Americans to educate them about S. 1 and help them take action to help get it passed.

So far, our digital organizing has resulted in nearly 50,000 grassroots actions taken in support of S. 1, including over 20,000 constituent calls and more than 23,700 emails to their senators.

We’ve also driven thousands of constituent calls in support of the Washington, D.C. Admission Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, which are key to protecting the freedom to vote and ensuring a truly representative democracy.

Defending the Right to Vote Across the Country:

As GOP lawmakers across the country attempt to suppress the vote, our community members have been leading the fight against voter suppression and to expand access to the ballot.

Arizona: Working alongside organizers from All Voting Is Local Action Arizona, LUCHA Arizona, Progress Arizona, and many others, Stand Up America has twice helped to defeat legislation moving through the state legislature that would have taken hundreds of thousands of Arizona voters off of the state’s Permanent Early Voting List.

Our community in Arizona has taken nearly 10,000 grassroots actions—including calls and emails to their legislators—to kill proposals that would create additional barriers to voting for Arizonans. Our digital ads campaign continues to drive thousands more emails in opposition to the many voter suppression bills working their way through the Arizona State Legislature.

Nevada: Our community in Nevada is working with All Voting Is Local Nevada and Mi Familia Vota Nevada to pass Assembly Bill 321, legislation that would ensure every active registered voter in Nevada would automatically be sent a mail-in ballot, establish ballot drop boxes in every county, and expand voting access for tribal communities.

New York: After our New York community members drove 2,200 calls and emails to state lawmakers, and groups like the Brennan Center and VOCAL-NY mobilized their membership, the state legislature passed a bill permanently restoring voting rights to 43,000 returning citizens.

Oregon: Building on our successful efforts in New York, we are partnering with Oregon Justice Resource Center (OJRC) and NextUp Oregon to pass the first state bill to affirmatively restore voting rights to people who are currently incarcerated: SB 57 / HB2366. If passed, this could serve as an example across the country that we have the power to repeal racist, Jim Crow-era restrictions to voting rights for all Americans.

Texas: Stand Up America has partnered with local groups like MOVE Texas to stop GOP-backed bills like SB7, which seek to limit early voting hours and prohibit election officials from proactively sending mail-in voting applications. Our Texas community members have already made hundreds of calls in opposition to the bill, which so far has failed to pass.

Looking Ahead:

In the coming months, we’ll continue building momentum for passing the For the People Act, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, and D.C. statehood through Congress, and will push Democrats to not let the filibuster stand in the way of protecting our freedom to vote.

We’ll also continue to mobilize our members in states like Arizona and Texas to fight back against any legislation that restricts access to the ballot and to help pass legislation in states across the country that expand the freedom to vote.
