Today, Stand Up America released the following statement celebrating and commemorating the start of Black History Month:
“Black history is American history. As we look back on the ghosts from our past that still haunt us today—from slavery and Jim Crow, to modern-day voter suppression—we must also remember the blood, sweat, and tears shed by Black Americans fighting to make our country a more just union.
“Black Americans have always been at the forefront of the movement against injustice, and this month we honor the legacy of the Black activists, advocates, and organizers that have led and continue to lead the fight for a fair and just democracy.
“As we work to honor the legacy of those Black Americans every day, Stand Up America is recommitting to the fight for justice and racial equity. Today, and every day, we remain singularly focused on reversing the legacy of Jim Crow and passing new laws that empower all Americans to participate in our democracy—including the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, the For The People Act, and statehood for the residents of Washington, D.C.”
