After Senate Democrats introduced the Washington, DC Admissions Act as S. 51, Stand Up America Deputy Political Director Reggie Thedford released the following statement:
“Our country is not truly representative until all of its citizens are represented in the halls of Congress and have power in deciding the laws that govern them—including the 700,000 residents of the District of Columbia, a vast majority of whom are people of color.
“It’s far past time for Congress to pass D.C. statehood and dismantle the racist system that has upheld white supremacy and suppressed the political power of Black and Brown communities in the District for centuries.
“We thank the grassroots organizers and Democratic lawmakers in Congress who forged this path towards D.C. statehood, and we implore the Senate to swiftly pass this legislation with 51 votes.”
