SUA Drove 8,000 Constituent Calls To Legislators In Support Of AVR

Group Launched Organizing Campaign With Digital Ads Pressuring Cuomo To Sign Bill

NEW YORK — Today, after New York State finally signed into law a bill to enact automatic voter registration (AVR), Stand Up America released the following statement:

“Over the last two years, thousands of Stand Up America community members in New York have made their voices heard in support of automatic voter registration, demanding their leaders enact this common-sense reform to increase voter participation and break down a key barrier to voting in New York.

“We were proud to do this work as part of Let NY Vote, a racially and geographically diverse coalition of activists and organizations without whose work this historic victory would not have been possible. We also want to thank the bill’s sponsors, Assemblywoman Latrice Walker and Senator Michael Gianaris, whose persistence was vital in getting this bill across the finish line.

“Now, this comprehensive law will ensure that over one million additional New Yorkers across the state will be empowered to participate in our democracy—especially those in Black and Brown communities that have long fought against voter suppression.

“We implore the 30 states across the nation which have yet to enact this critical reform to follow New York’s example. By passing automatic voter registration, they too can break down unfair obstacles to the ballot box, fight voter suppression, and empower all Americans to participate in the electoral process.”

Since March 2019, Stand Up America has driven more than 8,000 constituent calls to lawmakers in the New York State Senate and Assembly pushing for automatic registration. The coordinated campaign included a digital ad campaign, constituent emails and calls, a social media campaign, lobbying efforts in Albany, and other grassroots actions.

These efforts were coordinated in partnership with numerous national and local grassroots organizations as part of the Let NY Vote coalition, including AVR NOW, the Brennan Center, the Center for Popular Democracy, Center for Secure and Modern Elections, Common Cause New York, Demos, Indivisible, Make the Road, New York Communities for Change, Public Citizen, and numerous other groups.
