MOVE Texas, Stand Up America Launch Campaign To Contact 200,000 Texans To Register Voters

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Wednesday, September 9, 2020

SAN ANTONIO — Today, grassroots organizations MOVE Texas and Stand Up America are announcing a new volunteer-powered campaign to text more than 200,000 Texans to help register them to vote. In partnering together, the grassroots groups aim to register tens of thousands of Black, Latinx, Native American, and young Texans to ensure their voice is heard at the ballot box this year.

The two groups are coordinating the innovative peer-to-peer SMS texting program with Stand Up America’s community of more than 4,000 volunteers, with volunteers directly texting currently-unregistered Texans to help them register through MOVE Texas’ online application.

“The need for social distancing has made in-person voter registration efforts nearly impossible going into the most important election of our lifetimes, so in partnership with Stand Up America, we’re innovating to meet young voters where they are,” said H. Drew Galloway, Executive Director of the MOVE Texas Civic Fund. “By educating and empowering a new generation of Texans with the information they need to be voters, we’re tearing down the barriers that prevent far too many from making their voices heard.”

“We believe that strengthening our democracy means combatting voter suppression in all its forms and ensuring that more Americans participate in the electoral process. That’s why we’re proud to partner with MOVE Texas to help break down the barriers people face registering to vote in Texas,” said Sean Eldridge, Founder and President of Stand Up America. “This innovative campaign will reach, engage, and educate hundreds of thousands of Texans to help them register to vote ahead of the most consequential election in our lifetime.”

Together, the groups hope to test the most effective messages for encouraging registration before the November election, including text messages like these:

The new campaign is part of ongoing efforts by MOVE Texas to register potential voters across the state and state-level advocacy from Stand Up America aimed at helping remove barriers to the ballot that predominantly impact communities of color and younger Americans.
